Royal Chundu Island Lodge
Katombora Island - ring any bells? Not likely. It’s a private island retreat for a reason. Upstream from Zambia’s Victoria Falls, nestled among a pretty canopy of jackalberry trees and silver-blue waterways, lies Royal Chundu Island Lodge. A place that indulges both serenity and stimulation and as the name suggests, it’s fit for royalty!

Royal Chundu Island Lodge

Tucked away on the private island of Katambura, encircled by the Zambezi river channels and swathed in riverine trees, Royal Chundu Island is remote, but a journey well worth taking. The lodge, situated 22km from The Victoria Falls, is accessed through the Zambezi National Park followed by a sort boat trip to the island itself.

This family run lodge is a truly romantic Relais and Chateaux experience with impeccably maintained accommodation, cuisine and service - an example of which would be their luxurious neck massages on arrival. Four large, beautifully designed villas with an emphasis on romantic touches such as French concertina doors, wooden decks, comfy day beds and open-air bathtubs, all overlooking the river. Guests feast on traditional Zambian dishes made from fresh, local ingredients and lovingly prepared by executive chefs. Traditionally, lunches are served in dappled light beneath trees, beside the infinity pool. Dinners are under the charming, candle-lit bomas. The staff are available, yet discreet.

There are a myriad of things to do, if you can bear to leave your lodge! And once you are settled in, your guide and manager will plan your days according to your aspirations. Ideas include indulging your adventurous spirit with a trip to the Victoria Falls, helicopter flights, bungee jumps and white water rafting. On the ‘soul food side’ guests can try their hand at tigerfishing, canoeing down the river, experiencing the local customs, taking a sunset cruise or they can simply go back to their lodge for a portable massage. There’s nothing quite like falling asleep to the gentle sounds of river water and swaying leaves. Guests in the mood for romance can enjoy a pre-arranged, private, riverside picnic on a Persian rug - we might add! And for those travelling with children there are childminders on hand.
