The great reveal - Lions Sands River Lodge reopens!

I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to hop on a plane for the reveal of the evolved Lion Sands River Lodge last weekend hosted by the More family – I knew it was going to be something beyond extraordinary.

Beautifully situated in the southern Sabi Sand Game Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park in South Africa, the lodge hugs the banks of the Sabie River with picture perfect views as far as the eye can see.

It was almost a year ago now when I received news of the fire that destroyed the main areas of the original lodge. While the blaze was contained within an hour, and no one was harmed, it was a heartbreaking event for everyone.

There was no doubt that Rob More was going to rebuild and continue the heritage that was is so special for the More family. After all, it was their first lodge to welcome guests 40 years ago!

It almost goes without saying the game viewing in this area is vast, vibrant and exciting, especially considering the location on the river for an easy armchair safari! This is perfectly balanced with a team of staff who capture the experience so well and know how to take amazing care of their guests. The generosity and hospitality I felt was so touching, and it seemed to come completely naturally and easily.

The main guest areas are looking exquisite – it’s a very sophisticated interpretation of the traditional safari lodge we’ve all come to know and love – ‘lived-in-luxury’ at its best. It’s become a home where comfort is the order of the day. Plenty of natural light has created the feeling of less barriers between you and the wild, adding to that immersive wilderness experience.

It was great to see the changes and the new era begin for River Lodge. I have no doubt it will come into its own and fly the flag high for the family – a very special place with a lot of heart and soul thrown into it.

From ZAR 14,215.00 per person per night, they’ve found their niche. This is extraordinary value and a wonderful experience. The lodge is within easy reach from Cape Town or Johannesburg - Airlink offers daily flights to Skukuza Airport, where your guide will be awaiting your arrival and you’ll be whisked off for your first taste of a game drive on a 30-minute transfer to the lodge.
