Country living, modern styling & classical charm

We took the opportunity just last week to stretch our legs and escape Cape Town city life – and the path that followed led us to La Cle Country Lodge. Recently opened, the lodge is located on a working wine farm a stone’s throw from the heart of Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands, South Africa.

Oozing casual charm and refined living, La Cle Country Lodge is a five-bedroomed Cape Dutch inspired home away from home, easily booked on an exclusive use basis or per room. It needs to be noted that the situation of the lodge is second to none. The winding driveway welcomes you into an oasis – sprawling lawns from the swimming pool, beautifully manicured indigenous gardens and views over the vineyards and onto the foothills of the Hawequas. It’s easy to forget you’re a two minute walk from the village of Franschhoek, a world-class foodie scene with top-notch restaurants and delightful cafes. A stroll down main road, breathing in the local village life is one of my personal must-dos, popping into the boutiques and galleries that catch the eye.

Scott & Mel Shepherd, the duo Lodge Management team, fit the property perfectly. Together with their team, they deliver exceptional quality attention to detail and care to all guests. The feeling that nothing is too much trouble is pretty clear.

We arrived and settled into our room, and were offered a bottle of bubbly on the house. It seemed only natural to take it outside with us and succumb to the beautiful summer’s evening before dinner.

Mel is a highly experienced chef in her own right, and the introduction of family-style dinners has been the greatest addition for a completely unique experience. We arrived at the dinner table decked with platters of roast chicken & potatoes, a roasted medley of vegetables, a sundried tomato risotto that had everyone licking their plates and the most refreshing green salad and Asian slaw. Dinner is a social affair and guests are encouraged to connect and share stories. Those who have experienced this already, know the value and have highly recommended spending at least one of their evenings at ‘home’.

This is the perfect boutique country lodge to explore the Cape Winelands from, with Stellenbosch & Paarl in very close proximity to Franschhoek. Consider it the perfect compliment to a Cape Town getaway, and a safari experience through the Kruger in South Africa, the South Luangwa in Zambia or the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
