A treasure trove of opulence - a night at The Silo hotel

Last week Friday, Pieter and I decided to escape for a night out, a ‘babymoon’ if you will. Keeping it fresh and local, we packed our bags and travelled all 20 minutes to The Silo hotel. If you haven’t yet heard the name, it’s an iconic building, rich in local history, located at the V&A Waterfront Silo precinct in Cape Town, South Africa.

The building, having fallen into disuse in 2001, was once a centuries-old band of grain silos –the tallest in Sub-Saharan Africa at one stage – and became a hollow network of tubes and tunnels. The vision was to design a bulky construction into a museum of contemporary African art with a chic, luxury hotel above, and the concept has been realized to perfection. The hotel, situated above the world-class Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa), will be celebrating its first anniversary this month, but it’s been the talk of the town for far longer than that.

The hype is all for very good reason - we arrived to a team of staff with the biggest smiles, were shown to our beautiful suite with the most incredible views stretching across the harbor, the city and onto Table Mountain and made to feel most comfortable. The attention to detail is second to none and the impeccable service we received on all levels makes this one of our favourites in the city. The drought in Cape Town is very much top of mind and handled with great care and efficacy. There is a concentrated effort on educating and involving everyone in the water saving efforts – a feat that should be highly commended. They’re asking that everyone participates in water-saving initiatives, giving guests the tools to do just that.

An afternoon of spa treatments followed by a delicious dinner at The Granary Café rounded off the entire experience. The impressive Willaston Bar and the café take up the entire sixth floor with banquettes in a stampede of contrasting colours and leopard print, and bar stools in butter-soft, blue leather.

Those who are familiar with Liz Biden’s extravagant interiors at The Royal Portfolio's other hotels and lodges, namely La Residence, Birkenhead House and Royal Malewane, will have a fair idea about what to expect at The Silo: in two words, unbridled exuberance.
